What is a concept explanation?
Concepts, sometimes referred to as topics, are made up of two parts: a lesson (concept explanation) and a set of questions.
A concept explanation introduces a new topic to the learner before then moving them into a set of questions. Concept explanations are completed by the user at the beginning of a New, Power-Up or an Assignment.
They can also be revisited from within a question via the in app Help feature to support a child if they're struggling to answer a question. The concept explanation can be revisited by clicking on Explanation.
Connect and Discover
In DoodleEnglish the concept explanations are broken down into 2 sections - Connect & Discover.
Connect
Connect is the first section that children will see. It recaps previous learning through fun, visual tasks, boosting their confidence before they move on. This will help children to see a link between what they already know and any new learning. Having a hook on which to aid new learning aids understanding and helps it to stick better. This also helps build children's confidence. The interaction within this section is designed to be simple, accessible and ensure children experience success.
Discover
Next, Discover teaches learners about the new topic through a series of short steps. 2-3 distinct learning points are taught explicitly through modeled examples, designed to replicate how a teacher might model in the classroom. Each learning point is reinforced by an interactive learning element giving users an opportunity to learn by doing & gives them an opportunity to practise and use each small chunk of learning.
DoodleEnglish uses the 'Connect' and 'Discover' sections, as well as Doodle characters, to help unpack learning, share ideas and make observations in a relatable way.
Interactions
Children explore concepts in lots of different ways, helping embed learning and keep them on their toes. Learning doesn’t need to be boring!
All concept explanations in DoodleEnglish have 3-5 interactions.
Interactions in DoodleEnglish concept explanations include:
Joining - drag lines to connect prefixes + suffixes to the correct words
Ordering & sorting - DoodleEnglish helps develop an understanding of how to build a sentence by moving words and phrases around
Multiple choice - a clearer way to choose answers to sentence questions
Dropdown - children can view all options at once, letting them choose an informed answer, including completing sentences with the correct vocabulary or word class
Our concept explanations are also full of improved visuals to highlight key features of sentences and identify word types, building children’s confidence and ensuring progression!
Glossary
If a child isn’t sure what a word means, clicking on it will reveal a short definition, helping them understand key terminology and Doodle independently!
Any words with an orange dotted line underneath are part of the glossary. Simply click/tap on those words and a definition of what that words means will appear!
Text to speech
DoodleEnglish's concept explanations also contain text to speech functionality meaning all elements of the concepts can be read out loud to the learner helping to ensure that Doodle can continue to be used independently, even for our youngest learners.
Simply click/tap on the speaker icon and the text will be read out loud!
