DoodleSpell boosts the spelling confidence and ability of your 5-11 year old with a personalised work programme tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. A subscription to DoodleEnglish (whether that is through a home user subscription or a school subscription) comes with a subscription to DoodleSpell - it is part of your package and therefore something to really utilise.

Filled with thousands of interactive exercises, rewards and fun spelling games, DoodleSpell ensures that learning is always fresh and engaging, encouraging kids to use the app ‘little and often’. Rather than simply teaching how to spell words, DoodleSpell helps children to understand the meaning behind words and how to use them in sentences, giving them a solid foundation to build on in school.

It does this by supporting the 3 key learning styles : visual learners, auditory learners and kinaesthetic learners. It used to be recommended that learning to spell was to look at the word, cover it, then write it out - this however does not work for all, and this is where DoodleSpell comes in. It uses a variety of different strategies within the programme, to ensure accessibility for all different learning styles.

DoodleSpell covers the KS1 and KS2 and contains over 5,000 questions covering the whole curriculum including prefixes, suffixes, compound words such as silent letters, words that follow similar spelling patterns and yrs 3 and 4 and yrs 5 and 6 statutory spelling lists.

it works slightly differently to the other Doodle programmes, in that it has 2 main features available when your child signs into their Learning Zone.

The Learning Zone

In DoodleSpell the main lessons available for your child are revise and words.

Words

Consists of a practise and test format. Your child will need to complete a minimum of 3 practise rounds before they can unlock the test. There is however no limit on how many times your child can practise so if they don't feel ready for the spelling test they can have another practise round until they feel more secure.

Revise

Revise consists of 15 questions for your child to have a go at. Revise reinforces what your child has already learned, which will then prepare them for new learning.

Assignments

In addition, assignments can be set by your child's class teacher if it's a school subscription, or by a parent if it's a home subscription, think of it like spellings homework! 📖

Assignments can be selected from a huge range of options on the Parent Dashboard or you can add a custom assignment to help your child focus on tricky words or to support them with their weekly spelling list!
