What is baseline assessment?

Baseline assessment is Doodle's way of determining your child's current level of learning, by identifying gaps in their knowledge, and then using this information to create a personalised work programme for your child.

Who needs to complete a baseline assessment?

When your child logs into their Doodle account for the very first time, they'll need to complete a baseline assessment.

  • Children with a starting age under the age of 4.5 will go through two sets of five questions

  • Children with a starting age of under 5.5 will go through four sets of five questions

  • Children with a starting age of 5.5-6.5 will go through six sets of five questions

  • Children with a starting age of 6.5-7.5 will go through eight sets of five questions

  • Children with a starting age of 7.5 and above will go through ten sets of five questions

What does my child need to do to complete their baseline assessment?

At the beginning of the baseline assessment, your child will first need to confirm their birth month and year.

Next, your child will be asked to select how confident they feel with the subject.

  • Set it right next to Not confident if they’re working below their year group

  • Set it right next to Super confident if they're working above their year group

  • Set it in the middle if they are working at average in their year group.

Your child is now ready to begin their first baseline assessment exercise by tapping on the purple, baseline icon within their Learning Zone. Please refrain from helping your child complete their baseline assessment. Children must work independently on the baseline assessment to allow the app to fully understand your child's strengths and weaknesses and not the strengths and weaknesses of anyone else.

Finally, after each baseline assessment exercise is completed, your child will be asked if the questions they received in this particular exercise were 'too hard', 'too easy' or 'just right'.

What happens at the end of my child's baseline assessment?

At the end of your child's baseline assessment, your child will be placed into the curriculum at a point where the child has shown a gap in their learning. Advancing through the curriculum relies on building on foundations or earlier knowledge, which is why Doodle focuses on filling learning gaps and ensuring children are comfortable with basic concepts.

What information and baseline assessment data can parents expect to see within their Parent Dashboard account?

Throughout your child's baseline assessment you can begin to track their progress within your Parent Dashboard account.

Analyse > Effort

Here you'll be able to see how many baseline assessment exercises your child has completed each day. Simply hover over a column in the graph to see a breakdown of the work completed on that date.

Please note: you will not be able to view how many DoodleStars your child has earned in their baseline assessment until the final baseline exercise is completed. DoodleStars earned throughout all exercises in the baseline assessment will be awarded in full, at the time of completion.

Analyse > Understanding

It is important to note that you will not be able to see any data for baseline assessments that are still in progress. Once your child has completed their baseline assessment, you can view your child's current level of understanding for year group AREs or age related expectations.

You may find that a child's DoodleAge goes down after a baseline assessment - this is totally normal and to be expected. This will happen if the Doodle feels that your child needs to consolidate their learning on a few topics to ensure that those areas are fully embedded before moving them on to new learning, resulting in a stronger foundation for them to build their learning upon.
