To support learning or help revise challenging topics, children and teachers can add extra practice in areas they’d like to focus on. These are known as Assignments.
Each Assignment contains 15 questions on a curriculum topic. These questions are the first 15 in our question bank, introducing the topic from the very beginning and primarily focusing on fluency.
Teachers might consider setting an Assignment for their students in the following situations:
Pre-teaching: To check that children have a strong understanding of prior concepts before introducing a new one.
Consolidation: To assess whether children have understood the concept at the end of a teaching unit.
Scaffolded support: To provide structured assistance during lessons.
When a student who has been set an Assignment logs in after the selected date, a flashing red Assignment icon will appear in their Learning Zone to indicate that there is work to complete. If more than one Assignment has been set, students can choose which one they’d like to complete.
Adding Assignments to one or more pupils' work programmes is a great way to support your teaching scheme or address areas where students may need additional help.
Teachers can choose from a wide selection of pre-made Assignments created by Doodle, or they can create their own.
Through the Teacher Dashboard, teachers can set up to 20 Assignments per child across all four subjects.
Once an Assignment has been set, it will be accessible in the student’s Learning Zone for two weeks or until it is completed. After this period, it will expire and no longer be visible in the Learning Zone. However, it will still be available under Assignments > Analyse in the Teacher Dashboard.
How to add an Assignment in the Learning Zone
Teachers or pupils over the age of twelve can set themselves an Assignment from the Learning Zone in any of the Doodle programmes. For children under 12, Teachers can set an Assignment directly from the app by entering their teacher PIN. To do this:
Log in to Doodle
From the Learning Zone, tap the red Add Assignment icon
Type in a topic and follow the in-app instructions. The red Assignment icon will then appear in the Learning Zone.
Please note: Only one Assignment can be set through the app each day. When setting an Assignment via the Learning Zone, you will only be able to choose from topics within Age-Related Expectations at the student’s current Doodle Age, or up to two years above or below it.
If you’d like to set more than one Assignment, please do so through the Teacher Dashboard by following the steps below.
How to add Assignment from the Teacher Dashboard
Teachers can set Assignments for one or more pupils by visiting the Teacher Dashboard.
Log in to the Teacher Dashboard
Head to Assignments > Set
Use the search box to find the relevant Age-Related Expectation (ARE), or scroll through the available options
Click the arrow next to the ARE title to view the available lessons. You can preview the exact questions in each Assignment to see how they will appear in the student’s app.
Click Set assignment next to the lesson you'd like to set
Choose when you’d like the Assignment to become available and select the pupils who should receive it. You can assign it to:
The whole class
Individual students
Groups of students within the class
Tick the checkbox to highlight students in blue who have previously completed this Assignment. This helps identify repeat assignments, though you can still choose to assign it again.
Press Set assignment to confirm
When setting an Assignment via the Teacher Dashboard, you can also filter by content type. Most content appears automatically within students' work programmes. However, some content is only accessible when specifically assigned. For example, in DoodleEnglish, reading comprehensions are available only through Assignments.

You’ll now see the student’s current understanding of specific Age-Related Expectations (AREs), compared to their most recent baseline assessment.
Click the arrow next to an ARE to expand the topic.
Click the blue plus icon to set an Assignment in that specific area.
