DoodleSpell offers learners two games - Muddle and Spaceman.

Muddle is Doodle's version of the board game 'Boggle' and Spaceman is Doodle's version of the ever so popular game 'Hangman'.

Muddle

When playing Muddle, a child will need to create as many words from a grid of 16 random letters. This can be done in either a relaxed or timed mode ⏲, dependent upon your child's learning style preference.

If in timed mode, a child will be given 120 seconds to create as many words as they can. A countdown timer will be present in-app and show the child the amount of time remaining. The child will be allowed 4 hints, however, the board cannot be reshuffled.

If in relaxed mode, a child will be allowed to keep playing until they decide they want to quit the game. The child will be allowed 4 hints and 3 board reshuffles.

How to play

To begin playing the game, the child must select a tile and then create a word by dragging or selecting adjacent tiles. Valid words will be indicated by green tiles and words that are invalid will be indicated by yellow tiles.

Once the child stops selecting tiles, the resulting word will be checked. If the resulting word is incorrect, a cross will appear. If the resulting word has already been found, a grey tick will appear. Finally, if the resulting word is correct, a green tick will appear and the word will be added to a list showing all words found

Words will be scored based on their length.

  • Any word 2 or 3 letters long will receive 1 point

  • Any word 3 or 4 letters long will receive 2 points

  • Any word 5 or more letters long will receive 2 points

For every 5 points earned, a star will be awarded ⭐️

Does my child's age affect Muddle?

If a child has a DoodleAge lower than 8.12, any word length will be accepted.

If a child has a DoodleAge 8.12 or above, a word length of 3 letters or more most be submitted. The maximum word length for any learner is 6 letters long.

Spaceman

A child will begin Spaceman with a possible 6 stars to be earned and a full tank of fuel.

How to play

Like Hangman, a child will need to choose a letter that is in the word. This letter will be added to the word in the correct position and will no longer be able to be chosen from the keyboard.

If a child chooses an incorrect letter, the keyboard will show a red cross over the letter. The possible stars earned will drop by 1 and the amount of fuel left in the tank will as well decrease.

If a child guesses incorrectly 6 times, the fuel tank empties, the word is revealed and the game ends with zero stars being earned. The child will be invited to play again.

If the child guesses the word correctly, the game ends, telling the child how many stars they have earned. The child will be invited to play again.

Does my child's age affect Spaceman?

Depending upon the child's DoodleAge, the game alters slightly.

If a child has a DoodleAge lower than 9, the word that the child needs to guess will be between 5 and 8 letters long and accompanied by an image of the word to be guessed.

If a child has a DoodleAge of 9 or greater, the word that the child needs to guess will be between 5 and 8 letters long and no hint images will be offered.

Happy Doodling!
